SWAB TESTING

Swab Testing: Targeted Sampling for Hidden Areas

Swab testing is a highly targeted sampling method used during mold inspections to collect material directly from surfaces—especially in areas where other testing approaches may not be practical. It’s often chosen to confirm suspected growth and evaluate contamination in confined or hard-to-reach locations.

What Is Swab Testing?

Swab testing uses a sterile cotton or synthetic applicator to gather samples from a specific surface. The swab is carefully passed over the area in question, collecting mold spores and other microscopic particles. Once collected, the sample is sealed and sent to a laboratory for evaluation.

Depending on the analysis performed, the lab can confirm the presence of mold, identify the species, and in some cases determine whether the mold is active.

When Swab Testing Is Most Effective

This method is particularly useful when:

  • The surface is rough, porous, or uneven
  • Access is limited, such as in vents, corners, or tight spaces
  • There are visible stains or residues that need verification
  • A specific material needs to be tested without causing damage

Swab samples are commonly taken from HVAC components, upholstery, fabrics, and other delicate or irregular surfaces.

Advantages of Swab Testing

Swab testing offers several key benefits:

  • Precise sampling of targeted areas
  • Adaptability across many surface types
  • Non-invasive and low-impact on the property
  • Ability to detect viable mold through laboratory culturing

Because of its accuracy and flexibility, swab testing is an effective option when detailed information is needed about a specific area of concern.
